Speedo Deletes! Now Available for XS650's

Thats right folks, its been long in the making, but I am finally ready to release my latest product for the XS650's...

Lots of us Chopper/Bobber/Tracker/Cafe/Custom builders are deleting the giant clunky speedometer on these bikes, and that leaves most using the ugly chunky speedometer drive on the front wheel in place.  This new Speedo Delete spaces the wheel just like stock, while cleaning up your front end.

Machined from 6061 Aluminum to exact tolerances and specs, you won't be disappointed..

Simply remove the wheel, remove the speedo drive, pop out the dust seal from the wheel and remove the speedo drive tabs.  Pop the dust seal back in (if you so choose, its not required now that the Speedo Unit is gone) ensure that the spacer seats against the wheel bearing* and you are ready to go...  Install takes about 15 minutes.

*If the spacer does not seat against the wheel bearing, you may need to remove a small amount of material from the hub where the speedo delete makes contact until the wheel spins freely.  It is not uncommon, being that Yamaha castings were notorious for having extra material or casting flash.

Look what the cat drug home...

Took a trip over to Sylva, and brought back a truck full of randomness...

The main reason was to get a donor bike for my Shop Helper.  He just turned 18, and is looking to build his first bike.   He's super stoked....   The rest was just circumstance...

The Bultaco is my newest exciting project.... It will be a while, it's missing the carburetor and is locked up, but that has never stopped me in the past...  The Motobecane will end up in the hands of Briton Bees for a little hot rodding, and the XS is headed for a Street Tracker/Cafe' style build....  Stay Tuned Folks!!

Rollin' to the SOE

Took a trip with my shop helper to the SmokeOut 11 in Rockingham...  Being that he just turned 18, and had never been to a big bike event, I thought it was the right thing to do... 

We met up in Ellenboro NC with my friends Jason, Brian and Jeff...  I met up with Jason first.  Jason has been getting ALOT of attention on his XS over at XS650chopper.com, and I was super stoked to take this thing for a ride when he offered.  Jason has a bone stock XS engine, but it has been rephased and has a few of my little tricks inside...  Jason fired it up with 1 kick and it came rumbling to life...

I grabbed my helmet and jumped on...  I got about 20 yards down the road before I really got on it, and man did it go...  This thing was running stout!  I hit the end of the road, started slamming gears into a long straight away and saw a decent spot at a church I could turn around in...  I slipped the clutch a little, drifted through the turn and headed full throttle back to Jason's place...

I got back to his driveway and Jason was laughing...  It seems his wife was at the Church I had turned around at, and called him ASAP when she saw his bike.  I think the conversation went something like this:

Jason:  Hey Sweetie
Jason's Wife:  That had better not be you riding your motorcycle!!
Jason:  No Honey, Hugh is riding it, he's taking it for a test spin, is everything ok?
Jason's Wife:  Good thing, because if I EVER see you riding like that, I'm gonna cut your nuts off and then kill you!!!!!!!
Jason:  Yes Honey, Hugh is almost back, I love you....
Jason's Wife:  You better! You almost gave me a Heart Attack!
Jason:  Yes Honey....

Needless to say, there was a good time to be had laughing about that in the driveway when I got back...   I told him he needed a stronger clutch so I can pull wheelies next time - haha...  

The next morning we headed the SmokeOut.  Tevan (shop helper) and I were in the truck, so I got him to shoot some pics as we headed down the road...   Brian and Jason were rocking come sweet custom XS's, and Jeff was riding some form of HD.... 

Only has 1 minor little issue, a dead main switch which was quickly bypassed and we hit the road again...  The SOE was fun, but nowhere near as fun as years past...  The best part was just hanging with my friends and getting there... 

Tracker Style Pegs - Now Available!

Thats right folks, to make it easier for you to source the best parts for your XS650, I am now carrying a small inventory of Deep Six Cycles XS650 Tracker Pegs...  These things are NICE! 

Machined from 6061 Aluminum and made right here in Asheville by Deep Six Cycles, you'll be glad you ditched those clunky stock rubber pegs.... 

These new foot pegs are a great way to add that final touch to your project. They attach to the stock mounts after the original peg is removed. All it takes to remove the old peg is a minute or two with a drill or grinder. New hardware is included with every purchase!

Install is very straight forward, and these include a leveling screw machined into the base for perfect adjustments every time.

The beginnings of a Girder...

The newest build requires a custom fork.  Even with stock forks lowered as far as they could go, I could not even think of using them.  The tire would be hitting the trees, and the trail would be terrible...  Off to the drawing board.

I've know I wanted to build a girder for this bike for a while.  I dug through my pile of trees, and found a donor tree. 

These trees were in need of some help, being that the lower triple was bent.  So I got to work hacking off what I wasn't planning to use...

I chucked up the rest of the stem in the lathe, and spun it down... 

I had a set of tapered bearings laying around, so I knurled the stem to hold the lower bearing just a bit tighter... 

Now Im sure someone out there is wondering why I am bothering using the stock stem, when I could make a new one...  It's a no-brainer when trying to save some time, as this one already fits the headtube, and the bearings are gonna drop right in...  Sounds good to me...

Got the stem mocked up on the frame...  Not a great pic, but you get the idea...

Then I made up the top tree...  I still have to figure out handlebar mounting, but I have a plan for that too...  Should be sweet...  I could have just had these EDM, CNC'd or laser cut, but I wanted rounder forms for this piece since I would be staring at it the whole time I was riding... 

My Aluminum TIG welding is a bit rusty, but these will clean up just fine...  Can't wait to start on the lower tree in the next few days...  Until then, I'll be busy building cranks, cams and engines for customers, so stay tuned!
